Talk about timelessness! This movie, although conceived in 1964, does not fall out of flavor for even today's times. The idea about nuclear warfare, cold war scenarios, army affairs & everything related to it, hold such a sense of seriousness. But, the director, Stanley Kubrick, known widely for his eccentric movies (read, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, etc.) explores the comical side of such grave situations and does it with ease. The movie can be called a satire about all the things we term or overrate as serious.
The actors, especially Peter Sellers who plays three roles, performs excellently. Also, George C. Scott adds a lot of humor in the war room. The hot - line conversation between the American President & his Russian counterpart is the highlight of the movie, where the reality has been mocked upon.
To be honest, it is simply delightful to watch a movie representing such a serious issue, and blowing it apart with witty humor.
Upsides: Witty humor, timelessness, performance of actors.
Downsides: Probably, the comic part should have been enhanced so that even a layman can enjoy the movie.
Trivia: While shooting aerial footage of wastelands over Greenland, the second unit camera crew accidentally filmed a secret US military base. Their plane was forced down under suspicion of being Russian spies.
